What is a sender?

A Temperature Sender is designed to measure the temperature of cooling water , oil temperature in the engine, gearbox or differential, air temperature or seawater temperature in marine applications.

The brass housing contains a resistive disc firmly pressed onto the bottom of the case by a silver coated strong spring to avoid any aircap inbetween.

This spring also makes the contact between the resistive disk and the output terminal at the top. As the sender case is the negative terminal, the spring is insulated from the case by an insulating tube. A washer between the spring and the resistive disk prevents any damage to the disk. The resistance of the disk changes with temperature in a non linear curve.

Some temperature senders incorporate a switch as well for when a certain temperature is reached. The switch point is internally adjusted and is capable of driving a warning light up to 5 watts.

Pressure senders are used to measure oil pressure in connection with an electrical display unit. Some senders are grounded. Senders without grounding have a separate ground connection.

Pressure senders can also be equipped with a warning contact to signal the reaching of a pressure level limit.
